Seasons of life

Recently I came across some sort of online flashmob, with the question something like “How many seasons (like in TV series) were in your life”? And I thought – it’s a good question for self-reflection. Instead of TV seasons could be chapters or acts, call them whatever you like.

The simplest answer is your age, but it’s not good enough if you think seriously. Age changes artificially, without your intention. One year you live just like the year before, and then some Wednesday you lose your job (or find love of your life).

If you’re interested in my answer I’m now on 9th season of my life with a pilot episode before season 1 – early childhood, which I don’t remember.

After I wrote my list, I noticed a few questions that made me think further.

  • What events or transitions do you consider decisive? It could be change of work, relationships, relocations.
  • Do you have small or large seasons? Or both? Is this tempo comfortable for you?
  • What is the main thought or subplot of each season? Search for a dream, survival or stable life?
  • What changed in your values and environment? Did this transition change what you appreciate?
  • Can you name each season metaphorically, not by events, but by emotions or feelings? “Mistakes from the past” is one of mine.
  • What is your favorite and least favorite season?
  • Do some seasons or parts of them feel like filler?
  • Were your transitions drastically sharp or smooth?

After answering, maybe you’ll see some pattern. Or appreciate some periods more than you did while living them. The goal, if you can call it that, is to notice something. To appreciate now a bit more. Or just to remember: seasons change eventually.
